Broadway 101 Master Class Series

The Orpheum's Broadway 101 Master Class Series allows students in grades 7-12 to learn from the pros before they see the show!


Students in grades 7-12 are invited to learn elements like music or choreography from current and classic Broadway shows. Each class is taught by a cast member from the national touring show. Broadway 101 sessions are held prior to the Thursday night performances of select Broadway shows. Broadway 101 registration includes:

  • A two-hour workshop with a cast member of a nationally touring Broadway show.
  • A Q&A session with the cast member for an inside look at professional theatre.
  • Dinner from a local restaurant.
  • Orchestra-level ticket to the performance following the master class
  • A personalized keepsake Orpheum lanyard and nametag.

Class starts at 4pm. Registration cost varies. See show listing for details.

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Beautiful features a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, including “I Feel The Earth Move,” “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got A Friend”

The hills are alive! A brand new production of The Sound of Music, directed by three-time Tony Award® winner Jack O’Brien, is coming to Memphis. The spirited, romantic and beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family will once again thrill audiences with its Tony®, GRAMMY® and Academy Award® winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss” and the title song.

In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories, with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, it’s a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. Come fall in love with the magic for the first time—or all over again with classics such as “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl, “Part of Your World” and more! Disney’s The Little Mermaid is produced by Pittsburgh CLO & Kansas City Starlight.

The King and I

Two worlds collide in the Lincoln Center Theater production of this "breathtaking and exquisite" (The New York Times) musical, directed by Bartlett Sher. One of Rodgers & Hammerstein's finest works, The King and I boasts a score that features such beloved classics as "Getting To Know You," "I Whistle a Happy Tune," "Hello Young Lovers," "Shall We Dance," and "Something Wonderful." Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. Winner of the 2015 Tony Award® for Best Musical Revival, The King and I is "too beautiful to miss" (New York Magazine).

Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera will return to Memphis as part of a brand new North American Tour. Critics are raving that this breathtaking production is "bigger and better than ever before" and features a brilliant new scenic design by Paul Brown, Tony Award®-winning original costume design by Maria Björnson, lighting design by Tony Award®-winner Paule Constable, new choreography by Scott Ambler, and new staging by director Laurence Connor. The production, overseen by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Mackintosh, boasts many exciting special effects including the show’s legendary chandelier. The beloved story and thrilling score — with songs like "Music of the Night," "All I Ask Of You," and "Masquerade" — will be performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making this Phantom one of the largest productions now on tour.

Set in the '90s – the 1590s – this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom, two brothers who are desperate to write their own hit play while the "rock star" Shakespeare keeps getting all the hits. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL! With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, Something Rotten! is "The Producers + Spamalot + The Book of Mormon. Squared!" (New York Magazine).
