Creole for Kidz and the History of Zydeco has presented to more than 250,000 K–12 students, teachers, and administrators around the world, it seamlessly blends education and entertainment.
At its heart is zydeco—an authentic style of Black American roots music created by the French-speaking Creoles of South Louisiana. Through live performance and storytelling, students gain a deeper understanding of the music’s origins, cultural significance, and vibrant rhythms.
Program leader Terrance Simien is widely recognized as an authority on zydeco. He was personally selected to collaborate with legendary songwriter Randy Newman on a zydeco song for The Princess and the Frog—Disney’s land-mark animated film featuring its first Black princess and set in New Orleans. For the many millions of families around the world who’ve seen it, the film provided their very first introduction to zydeco music, including the memorable line, “Ready for a little bayou zydeco?” Similarly, millions more have enjoyed zydeco music at both Disney theme parks in the U.S.
The program brings that same excitement to life. Students don’t just watch—they participate. From singing along to the Disney song to joining the band on stage and moving to the rhythm from their seats, audiences are fully engaged in an interactive, joyful cultural experience. www.terrancesimien.com
