THREE 6 MAFIA is the Memphis hip-hop group founded in 1991 by DJ Paul (Paul Beauregard) and Juicy J (Jordan Houston), who remain the group's core members today. In 2006, Three 6 Mafia made history as the first hip-hop act ever to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song, taking home the Oscar for “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” from the film Hustle & Flow, and became the first hip-hop group to perform on the Oscars stage. The group's RIAA-platinum 2005 album Most Known Unknown produced the hit singles “Stay Fly” and “Poppin' My Collar,” building on a catalog that also includes the platinum When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1. Three 6 Mafia has also won a BET Award for Best Group and an American Music Award, and its dark, bass-heavy sound helped shape the crunk and horrorcore movements that continue to influence Southern hip-hop today.
