Stepping Into the Story is an Interactive Field Trip that lets K-2 students explore books in an immersive, hands-on workshop that fosters creativity, literacy, and critical thinking.
Registration Opening Oct 20, 2025
Stepping Into the Story gives K-2nd grade students the opportunity to explore their favorite books through their bodies, voices, and imaginations. This field trip engages students in a hands-on, immersive workshop that explores creativity, literacy, and critical thinking as they take the story off the page and onto the stage. Classrooms will explore the book Your Name Is a Song by Jamilah Thompkins Bigelow. In the book, a little girl is frustrated that teachers and classmates mispronounce her beautiful name. When she tells her mother she does not want to return to school, the little girl’s mother teaches her the beauty, history, and magic behind her name. Using the performing arts, students will explore themes of cultural acceptance, belonging, and kindness through students’ names and identities.
Stepping Into the Story integrates Tennessee State Standards in Fine Arts with Tennessee State Standards in English Language Arts. Please see below for more information.
Available for bookings December 2025 – April 2026 by inquiry only.
Please note, the maximum number of students we are able to host for an Interactive Field Trip varies based on a number of factors, including staffing and space availability. The Orpheum Theatre Group reserves the right to set the maximum capacity number for any Interactive Field Trip at registration based on these varying factors.
Classes begin promptly at the scheduled time. We recommend arriving 5-15 minutes early. All sessions take place at the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education, 225 S. Main Street, next to the Orpheum Theatre. Our Education and Community Engagement staff will greet the group in the lobby.
